Italian citizenship through ancestry

How do you get Italian citizenship through ancestry?

According to Italian law if you have an Italian ancestor you can apply for Italian citizenship through ancestry, provided the ancestor did not lose his/her Italian citizenship prior to giving birth to the next generation of your family, and provided your ancestor was alive in 1861, when Italy became a nation.
For more information see Citizenship by Descent.

One of the documents you will have to submit if you want to apply for your Italian citizenship through ancestry is the Italian birth certificate of your ancestor.
You will need to know the exact date and place of birth, and exact name and surname of your ancestor in order to apply for the birth certificate at his/her Municipality of birth.
If you don’t have those details, you are going to have to do an ancestry search.
