When pursuing Italian citizenship by descent, the first step will be to obtain the Italian birth certificate of the ancestor who left Italy.
How do you find an Italian birth certificate?
Locating an Italian birth certificate entails a process since Italian birth records are not readily available online.
Instead, you must request the certificate from the Municipality (Comune) of your ancestor’s birthplace. To proceed, you’ll need to find out their exact place of birth as well as their full details such as their full name, surname, and date of birth.
Once you have those details you may contact the Municipality where they were born and apply for their birth certificate via email.

If your ancestor was born before 1861 you will have to apply for their birth certificate from the Parish of the place where they were born, as Italy was not yet a nation before that date.
