Italian Referendum 2025 on citizenship by residence

On the 8th June 2025 a Referendum will take place in Italy to repeal five items of legislation, one of which concerns the requirements to acquire Italian citizenship through residence in Italy.
Italian citizens who live abroad will be able to vote by mail.

How does the 2025 Italian Referendum affect citizenship through residence?

Voting YES to the question on Italian citizenship halves the term for an adult non-EU citizen who resides in Italy to apply for Italian citizenship from 10 to 5 years of residence.
Voting NO keeps the 10 year term for a non-EU citizen to apply for Italian citizenship.

What are all the items of the 2025 June Referendum?

    1. YELLOW CARD
      Italian Citizenship: Reducing the required legal residence time in Italy for foreign non-EU adults applying for Italian citizenship from 10 years to 5 years.
    2. GREEN CARD
      Employment contracts with increasing protections – regulation of unlawful dismissals: Repeal
    3. ORANGE CARD
      Small businesses layoffs and related compensation: partial repeal
    4. RED CARD
      Exclusion of joint liability of the client, the contractor and the subcontractor for injuries suffered by the employee of a contracting or subcontracting company, as a consequence of the specific risks inherent in the activity of the contracting or subcontracting companies: Repeal
    5. GREY CARD
      Partial repeal of provisions on the application of a term to subordinate employment contracts, maximum duration and conditions for extensions and renewals.

An Abrogative Referendum question asks the voter if they wish to repeal the legislation therefore:
–   Voting YES supports the repeal of the current legislation
–   Voting NO supports keeping the current legislation into place
