There are three ways to become Italian or obtaining Italian citizenship: through birth, marriage or residence.

How to become Italian through birth

You qualify to be an Italian citizen if you have an ancestor who was born in Italy and was still an Italian citizen at the time of his/her children’s birth.

All you need to do is prove your birth link to your Italian ancestor.
In order to do this you need to obtain all the births and marriage certificates that link you to your Italian ancestor. You will also have to prove that your Italian ancestor didn’t lose their Italian citizenship before their child was born.

You can acquire an Italian passoport by marriage if you are legally married to an Italian citizen, and after you registered your marriage in Italy.

If these are in a language other than Italian you will also need them translated by a sworn translator. Then you will have to verify your submission at your nearest Italian Consulate. Once the application is finalised you will have to take a formal oath of allegiance to the Italian Republic.
