International students who wish to study at a University in Italy are required to prove that they obtained a South African qualification which entitles them to admission, such as a National Senior Certificate or a University degree depending on the chosen course.
Each Italian University has their own access requirements and they will assess if your study degrees give you access to the course you chose.
Supporting documents
When applying for admission to a University in Italy you will generally be required to provide the following documents:
- Study certificates (Matric and/or University degrees) and/or academic records.
Some Italian Universities accept copies, others require the legalised originals, in which case National Senior Certificates are generally issued by Umalusi and University degrees and academic records by SAQA. - A sworn translation of the study certificates, degrees and transcripts.
The sworn translations are generally also required to be either legalised by an Italian Consulate or Apostilled by the South African High Court where the translator is registered (either of these two forms of legalisation is equally accepted in Italy). - A Declaration of Value of your certificates and/or degrees.
This document is issued by the local Italian Consulate and contains information which the Italian University will use in evaluating your degrees, such as the type of institution which issued it, the requirements and contents of the course. - For Italian Government scholarships (see below for more information) or for the determination of the University fee bracket, you may be asked to provide information regarding your available income or funds such as proof of banking detail, tax return etc.
- A proof of proficiency in the Italian language may be required for courses taught in Italian, in which case a B2 level Italian certificate is generally prescribed.
Italian University registration procedure
International students who require a visa to study in Italy, such as South African nationals, should pre-register on the Universitaly website.
Students who do not require a visa to study in Italy, such as Italian or EU nationals who studied in South Africa, may contact the chosen Italian University directly for information on the registration procedure.
