If you are married to an Italian citizen you can apply for Italian citizenship online.
Your marriage must be registered with your nearest Italian Consulate and you must have the required supporting documents and sworn translations, thereafter the process is as follows:
a. create an account on the Italian Ministry website and complete an online submission;
b. the Consulates arranges a verification appointment and, if all is correct, they validate your submission and forward it for processing;
c. after a processing time of 6 months to 2 years you are called to give the prescribed oath
d. you may apply for your Italian passport
Required documents
– your Italian marriage certificate (estratto per riassunto dell’atto di matrimonio) issued by the Italian Municipality or Comune where it was registered. This can generally be requested from the Comune by email;
– your original unabridged birth certificate, with an Apostille (NB the Johannesburg Consulate requires this to be not older than 6 months);
– a police clearance certificate, not older than 6 months, with an Apostille. You need one criminal record certificate for each country of residence since the age of 14;
– a sworn translation with either and Apostille or a Consular legalisation of your birth certificate as well as your police clearance;
– a B1 language certificate. In South Africa you can obtain your B1 language certification from the Dante Alighieri Society in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban.
You can prepare for the B1 exam privately or through online courses or classes such as the ones given at the Dante Alighieri schools.
– a revenue stamp to be obtained from the Consulate (this payment can also be done online on your online application platform)
– a letter of exemption from the Department of Home Affairs. This is not legally required but the Consulate prescribes it to protect you from losing your South African citizenship.
